Scheme Machine Studios is a female- and queer-owned production company in Los Angeles.
Storytelling is at the core of everything we do, whether it’s film, photography, branded content or event production.
From concept to execution, Scheme Machine is dedicated to disrupting the status quo.
Scheme Machine Studios was founded in 2013 by Carly Usdin and Robin Roemer, who have a combined 30 years of experience in both the traditional and digital spaces.
The Founders
CARLY USDIN is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her first feature, Suicide Kale, won the Audience Award for Best First Feature at Outfest 2016. After playing over 30 festivals worldwide the film is now available on iTunes and Amazon Prime. Carly is also the creator and writer of two comic book series for BOOM! Studios: Heavy Vinyl and The Avant-Guards. Heavy Vinyl was nominated for a 2018 Prism award, honoring the best in LGBTQAI+ comics. Carly has recently completed post-production on her short film Misdirection, created as part of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, class of 2019.
ROBIN ROEMER is a visual storyteller producing, photographing and shaping content for advertising, entertainment and editorial. Her photos have graced the pages of national magazines and New York Times Best-Sellers and have been featured in national campaigns for companies like Dove and Levis. Robin served as the Director of Photography on the award-winning indie feature Suicide Kale. Recently she shot and directed the Pride campaign for Google called #ThisIsFamily. Her versatility and experience in media have enabled her to produce on everything from big brand campaigns to feature films. Robin produces events as well as video and film content. She was previously co-director of 400 person retreat run by Autostraddle.com called A-Camp, a 5 day queer experience based in Ojai.

Entertainment Weekly hired us to figure out how to remotely shoot all 10 contestants for "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" Season 5 during quarantine. We tested and refined a series of best practices for each queen to use at home, shipped gear kits to everyone and directed the shoots over Zoom. Post production was done by Good Co.
